CONFESSION: Most of our meals at home are eaten on the living room coffee table. We also never invested in wedding China or silverware. All of this does not mean that I don’t dream about Sunday dinners on fancy plates sitting on a pretty tablecloth.
The realty is that Sunday is our only day off and most of the day is dedicated to laundry, house chores, the occasional DIY and of course play time with our new puppy Buddy (you can follow him on Instagram here). While we always make time for Sunday dinner with our family we need plates and utensils that can go into the dishwasher.
If you’re tired eating on the couch let’s talk about some simple ways to make that often forgotten about dining room a more stylish, functional and inviting space. Below are some of my favourite ways to give it style quickly and on a budget.
First, let’s start off with paint. It’s by far the easiest and most economical way to give your dining room a dramatic makeover. I love using deep rich colours – even in a small space. It makes the space feel cozy and intimate.
Don’t think you have enough space for dining room? Try a round table. They’re perfect for tight corners!
The prettiest rooms are rarely perfect. Experiment with mixing + matching chairs, tables and accessories – only only in colour but also in style and texture. For example, try a bench and four chairs instead of a matching set, paint same chairs in different colours or different chairs in the same colour.
Now let’s talk about what’s ON the table. Every year I cook a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner for all of our Bermuda friends. Since we can’t all fit around the coffee table I DO set the dining room. One year I needed a table runner in a hurry and the only thing I had on hand was a roll of craft paper. I used a sharpie to write an inspiration message and just like that had a personalized runner in a jiffy. Below are some of my favourite creative ways you can use items around the house to dress up the table for any meal.
I don’t know about you but I’m inspired to dust off the dining room table!
