Ceiling Paint Colours That Aren’t White!

If you want to give your room a quick update on a budget, a fresh coat of paint is your best bet.  But even though we spend hours choosing the perfect wall colour few people give their ceilings a second thought.  We usually give up and paint them white.  Well, why should your walls have all the fun?

Using a fun shade on the ceiling is a great way to give your space a unique pop of colour.   It can also be used to trick the eye into believing rooms are bigger or small than they really are.  If you want to create the illusion of a high ceiling use light shades of crisp blue.  To make large open rooms feel cozier and more intimate use darker colours in warm tones like brown and orange.

If you want to experiment, the bathroom is a great place to start.  The ceiling is small so painting it won’t take long – perfect if you’re impatient like me!  TIP:  Warm damp spaces like bathrooms can be breeding grounds for mold and mildew – especially in the Winter when we’re most likely to indulge in long hot showers.  Instead of a regular wall paint use a product especially formulated to resist mold like Benjamin Moore Aura Bath and Spa.  Looking for bathroom inspiration?  Below are some amazing ideas from our Pinterest boards.  Click on the images for sources and don’t forget to Pin YOUR favourites for later.

The weather is cold and rainy but it’s always Spring and the skies are always clear in this blue and green bathroom.

Teal is one of my favourite interior colours.  It reminds me of the beautiful shades found in our ocean.   A rich turquoise ceilings is paired with a warm wood vanity and plenty of white for contrast.

Don’t forget to have fun with colour!  Purple may not be my first choice for a bathroom ceiling but doesn’t it look stunning!?  If you choose a unique colour like this one keep the rest of your design simple.

Think black walls are scary?  This bathroom ceiling is anything but!  Make a statement with a high contrast colour scheme like this black and white design sure to have your guests talking.

The kitchen is another great place to have fun with color.  Start with neutral walls and cabinets then add a bold ceiling colour like this blue/green.  It’s the perfect compliment to gold fixtures and hardware.

If you want to inject a burst of energy to any space, orange is the way to go.  Just like purple in the bathroom, this would not be my first choice (and honestly I’m not sure I would be brave enough to try this look at home) but there’s something so cheerful about this entry.  TIP: I would usually recommend a flat or matte finish for the ceilings because they don’t reflect as much light and won’t highlight surface imperfections.  However, if your ceilings are very smooth try a satin finish for a warm glow.

What happens when the ceiling paint takes over? Magic!   In this beautiful space (from my dream house I might add – seriously click on the photo to check out the rest of this amazing space) the dark teal colour is used on the trim and down the wall where it meets with crisp white paneling.

Decorating the nursery?  Your little one will probably spend a fair share of time starting up at the ceiling so why not cheer it up with a fun pink shade?  For a soft look try Benjamin Moore Cream Puff 2174-70 or Pink Swirl 2171-70.  TIP:  To keep your family healthy look for zero VOC paint formulas which are designed not to give off any harmful fumes or odors.

And while we’re on the topic of pink who says it’s only for kids?  This adult space is stunning!
